It is the raining season in Korea. And due to another rainy day today I thought this post would be very suitable for this weather. Why Haemul Pajeon, Makgeolli and rain??? Well this is the comfort food of Koreans on rainy days.

I still remember that I ate this dish on my second day in Korea last year. And I loved it right away! Especially Makgeolli. This korean alcoholic rice wine is made by fermenting a mixture of water, wheat and rice. It has a milky-white color and usually contains about 6-8% alcohol. In the Makgeolli Jib, places specialized in it, it usually comes in these, I call them Aladdin-pots, and is drinked from bowls.

How Makgeolli is served at the Makgeolli Jib in Hapjeong, 전주막걸리 - 합정.

Haemul Pajeon is a korean seafood pancake that is savoury. It is usually made out of scallion, squid, shrimps and or clam and octopus mixed with a batter made out of flour, water and eggs. It is the best when it has this crispiness on the outside and is fluffy in the inside. The Haemul Pajeon taste fits really good to the sweetness-taste of Makgeolli! Loving it!

This Makgeolli Jib was really delicious and also had a variety of other small dishes like Jabchae, TTeokkbokki, baked eggs, chicken soup, fried oyster mushrooms and kimchi tofu. They also had this fancy wall with old phonograph records. 😄

There is another Makgeolli Jip I went quite often with my friends from Kumdo. Either for diner after training or as the second or third station on one of our long drinking nights. 😉 It has a really unique old-fashioned wood interior which I really like. Somehow you get some underground-like feeling when you are at this place. There are some photographs on the walls showing scenes from a Korean movie (or K-drama) which was filmed in this place. Looks like some gangster-mafia movie... I am not quite sure.^^ Anyways, besides it's extraordinary wall with writings and newspaper pieces this place serves really good Haemul Pajeon and is really cozy during rainy days!

They also have other dishes like Sundubu Jjigae or Kimchi Tofu which we ordered the last time. Try to go here once if you are somewhere around the area of Sinchon! I think it's a really unique Makgeolli Jip!!!
